Despite being called a marathon, the course has changed quite a bit over the years and is now ‘only’ 20 miles, but you’ll be jolly glad it’s not any further! It took a full 45 minutes before the first rider overtook me and then more and more swiftly followed. Although it appears that on hot days horses fare less well as they’re not so nimble as us humans when going downhill, neither the muggy and overcast weather nor the technical descents appeared to slow down the leading horses.

Rather than feel any need to speed up, it was mesmerising to watch these stunning animals go by, their riders wishing us luck as they rode on. In fact, the good humour of both riders and runners made this race feel very special. However, I wasn’t just overtaken by horses but also the occasional human, when fresh-faced runners would replace weary ones. At first I was a little confused by where they’d come from, but then I discovered there was a three-leg relay option – which at certain points in the race, I’m sure one or two of the marathon runners wished they’d known about before entering.

As the miles ticked by and the horses overtook me, I was glad to see the end, near Victoria Wells, was within sight. With only a few more streams to cross and an uphill field at the end that sucked the life out of me, I was ready to collapse in a heap as I crossed the line in 3 hours 30 minutes, in 49th overall and 20th-placed human. This is a thoroughly enjoyable and exhausting event – and one guaranteed to increase your respect for the equine race.
